In a spirit of fun that would not be unknown to later generations of Sulcers, the family participated in a community skit that was “certainly very ludicrous”. The show was held in the largest venue of the city on a Friday evening in the winter of 1890, 2 years before the death of Cullen.
Riverside, March 1, 1890
The session of the “Deestrict Skule No. 109” was held at the Loring last evening. The fact that many of the most dignified elderly people in Riverside going back to the days of their childhood in dress and actions was sufficient to attract a very large audience. There were nearly 800 people present to witness the performance. The Eolian Orchestra furnished the music and rendered several excellent selections during the evening. The entertainment was certainly very ludicrous and caused much laughter, although some of those present were disappointed to find that a change in teachers had been made and instead of W.W. Wilson, the original teacher, the character was taken by Moore Hesketh.
At the commencement of the program, I.V. Gilbert sang “Fifty years ago” in the company of a very old man, which was well received, after which the curtain was raised and the “children” were seen going to school. The make-up of the different characters was excellent, and as the different ones appeared and went through with their youthful frolics they were received with hearty applause. The opening of the “skull” developed the fact that several scholars were absent for whom excludes were given. During the session of the “skull” the recitation were a little lengthy but brought out quite a number of excellent local hits which were well received.
The visit of the school committee was very good and the “little” scholars rendered their selections well, much to the pride of their parents, but evidently not to the satisfaction of the committee, for at the close of the exercises they immediately proceeded to discharge the teacher.
